The Golden Ratio: Understanding Beauty
Did you know that our brain sees beauty with the help of symmetry? The golden ratio is a mathematical measurement to define if someone's face is perfectly symmetric. The ideal result—as defined by the golden ratio—is roughly 1.6, which means a beautiful person's face is about 1 1/2 times longer than it is wide. B. ... If the numbers are equal, a person is considered more beautiful.
However, this calculation is mostly used in arts, where symmetric faces are most likely to be considered good and more pleasant to the eye. A good example is observing the villains x the princesses's faces by Disney:
As you can observe, most villains have asymmetrical faces compared to the princesses. Their faces will much likely fit into the golden ration which makes them more likeable and pretty to the eye.
Is everyone symmetrical?
Absolutely not, in fact most of us have asymmetrical features. The importance in understanding this rule is that will allow you to be a better makeup artist and learn how to enhance your features correctly. Another tool that helps you learn more about facial features is the Marquardt Mask. Also knows as the "beauty mask", it shows a facial measurement that fits perfectly into "beautiful people".
Apparently only a small percentage of humans will fit into the mask and no one less than Angelina Jolie and Marilyn Monroe to be part of that few. That includes perfectly symmetric eyebrows, forehead, chin and the distance between eyes and lips is correspondent to the rest of the face.
How can I become more symmetrical?
The truth is: you don't need to. Most of us have asymmetrical faces and we are completely fine with that! Also note that most of celebrities nowadays do a procedure called 'facial harmonisation', which means injecting fillers on your face to make it fit better into the golden ration. If asymmetry is something that really bothers you, then you can enquire about that treatment. There are also loads of tricks that can be done with makeup to fix eye size, nose and distance between brows. The best way to improve your skill is to download the Marquardt Mask and practise applying the measurements on yourself and friends!
