Power Series: The Vision for Mehreen

My Beauty Squad has a duty to the community of women that want to uplift and empower each other. This Power Series showcases women of different backgrounds, talents and careers and shows how visions begin to come to life when you put your mind to it.

Introducing Mehreen, Optometrist by day, beauty blogger by night!

Tell us a bit about yourself, your passions, and your goals?

I'm a locum (freelance) optometrist. I started off blogging in 2011 as a hobby, whilst I studied optometry to ensure I maintained a creative side. I wanted to share my fashion and beauty tips online as a passion, which ended up growing! My goal is to maintain my authentic content creation, whilst also working in the eyewear industry.

So, you came from studying optometry to then being a beauty blogger, to then creating your line of jewellery. How did this come about?

I don't want to be an 'eyewear' blogger hehe, I like to keep them 2 worlds separate! and that's how it essentially started. As much as I love being an optometrist, I realised becoming a beauty and fashion blogger let me take my mind out of that industry when I needed to. My blog naturally grew, and I started attending events, working on brand campaigns etc. My line of jewellery came about when I realised there was a gap in the market for on trend, affordable fashion accessories. I feel like big high street brands accessories mark up was getting a bit out of hand, so I wanted to do something about it!

What was the hardest part about building yourself and transitioning into a more beauty-focused career?

Not knowing anything about PR, haha. I studied a very scientific background, so actually learning how brands and PR work was super interesting. If I'm honest, I'm still learning about it as I grow!

What would be one thing you could tell yourself when you were younger career-wise?

As much as university isn't for everyone, stick at it if you know what you want to do! In my opinion getting a good foundation will allow you to invest in other opportunities. I've been able to invest in my jewellery business from the career I've built as a locum optometrist, so don't regret any choices I've ever made!

What is your favourite and least favourite thing about beauty?

Favourite thing is how creative beauty allows me to be. The colours, everything! My least favourite thing would be HOW MANY PRODUCTS there are to choose from nowadays! Although some people may like it, as a beauty blogger having to buy and test out so many products can sometimes be quite wasteful and unsustainable!

What is your power?

Being able to do 20 things at once, hehe.
