"You know it's all about that base...bout that base", no trouble; I put some of the top branded primers and moisturisers through their paces. With so many options on the market, it can get a bit confusing and often lead to cupboards and makeup bags full of various creams, gels and serums that go unused (RIP to all that £££).
To aid in avoiding the 'What does this cream do again?' dilemma that we have all faced at some point in our beauty lives, it's important to know the effects, benefits and combinations that work well.
Moisturisers are created to...well, moisturise and generally increase hydration for plumper skin; and primers are created to provide a base for foundation by smoothing out skin tone, texture and brightening skin appearance. As a rule of thumb, moisturiser are applied straight onto clean skin and primers are applied once the moisturiser has set into the skin (between 5-30 mins), a primer is then left to set for a few minutes before adding makeup. Below, I have outlined my three favourite primers, three favourite moisturisers and how they best pair together.
The Fenty Beauty primer is definitely one of the top trending primers on the market. With a peach colour and thick creamy consistency, application is cooling with a brightening effect. At first, application can feel tacky but once dry, it seeps into skin with a thin powdery film that combats oily skin and fills in very fine lines. Due to the finish, especially for those with dry skin, the product needs assistance in terms of moisturising.
Introducing Cellex-C Hydrasmooth moisturiser. This particular moisturiser is a probiotic, peach toned thick cream that thins out on application. One of my favourite aspects of this product is that a little goes a long way, although liberal application is advised. Leaves skin feeling dewy and looking brighter; smelling amazing with a thin layer created to protect from daily debris.
Due to the similar colouring, brighting effect and contrast in dewy vs powdery finish, I believe the Cellex-c Hydrasmooth moisturiser works in perfect harmony with the Fenty Beauty primer. Together they create a natural, brightened, moisturised and oil controlled finish that would suit any skin type/tone and keep any makeup base in place all day.
Figs and Rouge Light Reflective Brightening Primer & Illuminator. A mouth full right? But seriously, this product may just be the most gorgeous illuminator I have ever seen. The smell is so fresh, consistency like a light milk cream, cooling to the skin, quick drying and stunning rose gold in colour. This primer dries to a powder, does not budge and glows like a piece of fresh polished copper. The rose gold reflecting flecks will brighten up even the dullest of skin textures with a barely there feel.
The Gold Serums 24K Gold Serum with Marine Collagen is a light cream moisturiser with highly reflective gold particles. For those dreary days when skin is lacking that youthful glow, this is the moisturiser to go for. Not only is it beautifully light and moisturising, it also adds a youthful sun-kissed glow. Use it to highlight areas such as cheek or brow bones or place all over the face, neck and decolletage for an all over shimmer that will get you noticed. As if that wasn't good enough, the collagen enables the moisturiser to gently blur fine lines for an even more youthful appearance.
Combining these two products with provide a glow that will shame the sun. Smoothing out skin, leaving it feeling velvety, moisturised and looking radiant; I could not recommend a better combo for those who need a lift of shimmer with a luxurious feel. This combo would intensify a dewy finish and enhance a matified one. Alternatively, wear them as a combo on its own for a natural and healthy glow. Nothing says luxury like a touch of gold. Glow on Gorgeous.
This is a classic, the POREfessional pore reduction primer from Benefit. This primer smells flowery and is peach in colour which helps to brighten the skin. The consistency is that of a thick serum which applies smooth as satin, melts into the skin, fills in lines and pores. With its instant drying formulae, its easy to see why this particular primer is a beauty must have for many a beauty guru. If you are looking for something to create an even textured skin base with a hint of brightening, this is for you.
Lubatti Anti-Age Super Firming Face cream took me a little while to appreciate. The fragrance is reminiscent of subtle hand sanitiser and the blurring of lines/wrinkles can take some time to show. However the texture of the product is extremely silky and blends beautifully with a dewy finish in both look and feel. The smell (not offensive but noticeable) subsides over time; once the blurring effect begins, it continues to work throughout the day, firming skin. The feeling of skin tightening is a pleasant sensation and the intense moisturisation with a barely there feel is hard to match.
Although this combo may not be as perfectly matched as the two above, I would recommend it for maturing skin and anyone with larger pores and fine lines. Skin feels smooth and flawless with the perfect amount of hydration, ready and capable of holding any makeup on for many hours.
The moral of this story beauties is to marry your beauty products. Don't simply purchase an individual item, think about how it fits into your routine and whether it will work with your favourite products. As with anything, some matches are instantly obvious, whilst others take time to realise the compatibility. Either way, never be afraid to try new things and let your inner goddess shine.
Until next time flawless females.
